Fiddle Lessons

Matt is a full-time fiddle teacher, and can teach at his home in Dorchester, Dorset, or at your home (a small charge for travel expenses applies if you are more than 10 miles from Dorchester).

Matt provides several things that you might not find in a conventional lesson. Most traditional music is passed on by word of mouth which means that the musician carries their repertoire of tunes around in their head rather than in a music case. Just about all of Matt's current students are learning tunes by ear on a regular basis whilst also working on their posture, techniques, tone, intonation and history behind each particular tune. Though this might sound difficult to some it is in fact quite easy. It is like anything else new to us, we just need to keep doing it in order to get better at it. The main bonus of playing the fiddle (or any other instrument) without sheetmusic is that the player has much more attention that they can focus on what they are actually doing. ie. tone, intonation (tuning), posture, technique and more.

To make life much easier with this type of learning process, Matt uses up to date technology to make a tailor made recording of the tune that each individual is learning, compress it and send it on via email. He then advises his students on how to use these recordings at home to help the learning process.

All ages and all abilities are very welcome. You do not have to have a lesson every week - your teaching schedule is left entirely up to you!
